Council divided over tax increases and cuts in service.

The link below takes you to a Washington Post article detailing the conflicts inside the council offices on tax increases and service.
Jim Graham seems to have his heart in the right place when he shows concern over homelessness.
Tommy Wells is way out in left field worried about bus service.  Where is his priorities?

Economic Development in Brightwood and Petworth.

Citizens for Neighborhood -Community Economic Development

After much debate and discussion on this and other list serves on the lack of development in and around the Brightwood neighborhood,  and supporting areas of both Petworth and nearby sections of Ward 4.  I would like to propose that we convene a series of meetings that include, existing business owners,  property owners, future business owners,  and members of the Brightwood and Petworth Communities.

Initial meeting to include nominations for The Development Committee that will serve to develop a strategy that is reflective of input from existing businesses,  and residents on where they currently see Georgia Avenue and all other business areas of  the two above mentioned neighborhoods and what they would like to see both short term and long term with regards to development,  and opportunity.

As a group we would canvass the current business to see what they feel would best move their business forward with growth, profit, public safety and awareness.  Secondly, we would solicit information from the business property owners to see what options they feel they need for fa├žade improvements, general upgrades to appearance. As well as what tools they need to help them attract prospective business to their vacant store front.

Let’s discuss what types of business and services we would most support and what are needs are as a community but in open dialog so as not to demonstrate harsh negativity toward anyone business or type of business.

The initial meeting would include naming 5-8 key individuals that would design a questionnaire, that would be used in gathering this information.  This questionnaire, would then be utilized in a door to door,  or store front to store front campaign to make a first round contact with the current owners and  property owners.
Followed up by a second meeting to discuss the findings of this group.
Let’s build on what we have,  and bring other businesses to the area that would serve our needs.

Is there an interest from those that communicate on this list serve to attend and to participate?  Do you have others in mind that might also be interested?  Know of a business that would also like to work with us,  then invite
If you are interested then kindly forward an email with contact information to me and let’s get started.

I propose the first meeting to be on Monday 6th of June,  location to be determined.

As quickly as we see how many participants are interested then I will find a place for us to meet.

Together working with an open mind,  and our sights set on improvement we can bring about the badly needed economic impact that our community needs.

I look forward to your response.

Bowser makes a huge mistake in her claims about residential parking permits

From another Blog,

Graduated parking fees wouldn’t hurt Ward 4

Muriel Bowser got quite angry at Tommy Wells yesterday over the proposal to make residential parking permit (RPP) fees higher for a household’s second and third cars and beyond. She claimed Ward 4 would pay a disproportionate amount, but has not gotten its share of transit expansion. However, the numbers don’t bear out her claims.
Under Wells’s proposal, approved by the entire Committee on Public Works and Transportation, Ward 4 comes out in the bottom half of wards in terms of how much they would pay, as would Ward 5, whose council member, Harry Thomas Jr. also called the $25 to $100 per year charges “exorbitant.”
But the real winners in this proposal are Wards 7 and 8. Wells is proposing a revenue measure hugely favorable to residents east of the Anacostia, at a time when Circulator service in his ward is being cut and service added to Ward 8.

View the link below and see exactly what our council member is paying members of her staff

I requested the following information and received it earlier today.  As you read you will notice that Ward 4 currently has one of the highest payrolls.  It details the position and the salary.  Names have been redacted.  But clearly the salaries are there, and you can then look at the Web page for said councilmember and determine who is paid what.  You'll find this very interesting.  Additionally, I hope you will compare other wards and councilmember with what they pay their staff's.

Here is a series of emails that have offered no follow up from Bowser's office on stop signs for Sherman Circle,

Dating back as far as June 6 2010, I engaged Muriel Bowser about pedestrian safety at Sherman Circle, NW.  Not long after a child was struck in the cross walk on the circle,  To date her office has not kept up,  and not offered any positive response from DDOT. Even thought under the former administration they promised to correct the problem of how the signs read.

This is just the last detail of the many emails that went back and forth on the issue.  Councilmember Bowser was involved personally.
You can read for yourself.

Muriel,
Your office NEEDS to stay on top on this and push DDOT for a plan now.  Far too much time has already been wasted.
There seems to no follow up from anyone on this unless I find the time to do so.
Please assign someone in your office to keep on this.  Your reasoning more than 2 months ago "that we don't go around putting up stop signs" no longer works.
Best -Keith

Good morning,
I need to know what is being done to slow down traffic both on Sherman and Grant Circles?
I had a car run the yield sign on Grant this morning and nearly plow into me.
This is happening far to frequently and as I have suggested before something needs to be done.

if this is happening to me with any type of regularity it must be happening to many others.

Can we please move forward on this to assure that everyone's safety is paramount and thought of?
I look forward to hearing back from both 4D and the councilmembers office on this subject and what we can expect and when!

Best -
Keith

Good morning Lt.  Whiteside,
I would suggest unmarked cars in various positions around the circle, pulling over motorist that fail to yield and that drive way too fast.
Write tickets and suggest that they stop cutting through, but rather stay on the main roads, such as Georgia Ave.  Most of the abusers are Maryland cars.
DDOT needs to get moving and put up some stop signs, to help out with slowing down things as well.
But a presence from MPD will go a long way I feel in getting the word out that yield signs should be respected.

Yeah well Brandon,  DDOT was brought into the loop on this months ago and has thus far not done anything.
Perhaps the Councilmember can call in a favor and get something moving on this before it becomes a tragedy
It shouldn't be left up to MPD to resolve.  They can't put someone there all the time.
Traffic control, implemented properly would work all the time.

Communication.....

Let's begin to communicate and share our thoughts on the elected representation for WARD 4.  Let's talk about our concerns,  our needs,  and how best to approach the future in getting them addressed,  and our needs met.
Let's begin to converse about who we can support that will carry our needs to the very core of what they build their efforts on.  Let's talk about electing someone that will sit down with us and better understand what we are interested in.  How we want our Ward moved forward and what we expect from our elected representative.

This blog is about communication.  It is about sharing ideas,  ideology.   It is about talking about what is wrong and bringing a solution to what is needed to correct the wrong.   It is about a carefully charted approach to bring more into the mix and into the discussion of how we see the ward,  and the leadership we elect.

I launch this blog so we can begin the process of talking through the problems, by first identifying them,  and working together to forge a solution.

I invite all to reply and offer their thoughts.  Some of which I will agree with and those that I may not.
Together,  we can build a better place to live and work through the development of a platform that outlines our concerns.  Then we have to work together to attain the leadership that will then carry out the part of which falls onto those elected in how they represent us.

I look forward to your participation.

This is getting interesting and I must say demonstrates what you have to do to get fairness, as well as
to have your views listened to and acted upon in a decent manner.
Thanks to those that have been involved and heard my concerns.

Mayor Gray from you One City web site:”The citizens of the District of Columbia have been heard and we’ve elected a Mayor that will restore integrity and leadership, and is truly committed to Building One City
From a quote the Washington Examiner: “Many of us have operated under the false assumption that a rising tide there would lift all boats," Gray said. He added that "during my tenure as mayor, I will not forget the fact that some boats are still tethered to the harbor." Vince Gray.

Today Mayor Gray I bring you bad news.  That bad news is the fact that under your leadership the Department of Disability Services has cut the services for a young man with a brain injury.  They did this at a time that his integration back into community is crucial.  They did this at a time that it is unthinkable in any state in our country for such deeds to be done, yet after all your promises and all we have heard your hold over Director, Laura Nuss has successfully done this.
So where is the empathy?  Where is the conscience of Laura Nuss and your senior staff when I asked them to meet with me personally about this?
Why Mayor Gray do we have such outrageous acts of inconsideration for our most needed residents?
I walked the street with Vince Gray this past summer to help get him elected.  We had two short conversations about our disabled, and it now appears that none of what then Chairman Gray said really matters now.
How can we even approach the seriousness of the budge if your Directors are making cuts such as this one,  and your senior staff won’t even approach meeting with members of the community to discuss these horrific acts?

What can we expect a fair and reasonable resolve and when can I expect a conversation with your senior staff to assure that they are fully engaged in the details?
